Gamardi community leaders and students share vision for school

HSC’s new principal, Tehmineh Mason, recently spent time in Gamardi speaking to families and Elders about their hopes and vision for the new homeland school. By the river, and under the mango trees, they shared stories about what education and Country means to them, and how local knowledge, language and ways of teaching can guide classroom learning and shape a school that truly belongs to the community.

The families and Elders spoke with pride and excitement about co-designing their own school programs and taking an active role in their children’s education, and walking alongside teachers in this new journey. The Gamardi students were just as enthusiastic, eager to share what they love most: art, music, hunting, and stories about their Country, as well as their ideas about what their school on Country could look like.

There’s a deep sense of hope in Gamardi. Everyone knows that building something new takes time, patience and teamwork, but there’s also joy in knowing that the path ahead will be walked together.

In the coming months, we look forward to visiting some of the other homelands too, for camping and curriculum workshops. A warm thank you to the community, for their generosity and welcome. The journey has only just begun!
