Homeland Life &
Community Development

Monica Wilton | Director

“I wanted to help my community by being part of the Homeland School Company. I believe in independent education. We can fight for it because we have every right to have a say over what’s taught in our schools.”

A future hub

Over the last couple of decades, there has been a shift away from government support of Northern Territory homelands. Since the Intervention in 2007, in the Djelk Indigenous Protected Area we’ve seen resources pushed into Maningrida, which has become a focal point for employment, education, health care and service provision. With this shift, other issues have emerged, such as overcrowding, crime and poor health.

The Homeland School Company’s Directors and leaders have been working closely with Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation to formalise a vision for a revitalisation of homeland communities across the Djelk IPA, including upgrades to roads, teacher houses, power, internet and water, as well as the establishment of local enterprises and homelands-based ranger groups. We envisage that the homelands schools will become hubs of employment and activity.
